Frozen fundraiser finds its footing
Fire Dept. event makes comeback on Nisswa Lake
The snow pants and parkas stayed in the closet this year as eager anglers returned to Nisswa Lake in jeans and hoodies for the Nisswa Fire Department’s annual Fishing Jubilee on Feb. 15. And what a return it was.

About 150 anglers claimed their ice-fishing holes, set their tip-ups, and reeled in prizes on a balmy winter day that approached 50 degrees — all while a sturdy base of ice set the proverbial stage.
All told, the Nisswa Fire Department raised a reported $7,000 during this year’s event. The total may not rival some past years, but the day itself was unforgettable. Locals drove their vehicles onto the ice, parking right next to the action for an easy, uncrowded, sun-soaked afternoon of friendly competition.
The tournament remains the department’s signature fundraiser — a longstanding tradition built around one of Minnesota’s favorite winter pastimes. This year’s return to the lake carried added meaning, as poor ice conditions forced the event indoors at the Nisswa Community Center the past two years.
