Go Serve Big!
Ready. Set. Summer.
Small-town traditions, big community spirit
As summer events reach their peak in the Brainerd Lakes Area, we’re reminded that our communities are built on more than homes and real estate. They’re built on people, service, and organizations that make a difference every day.
From supporting local veterans through Homeless & Wounded Warriors – MN to celebrating the work of the Eagle’s Healing Nest in Sauk Centre, we’re proud to be involved with causes that strengthen our communities.
In this month’s Homeward Bound, we highlight several events that reflect those values, including Nisswa Freedom Day, a motorcycle ride benefiting Homeless & Wounded Warriors – MN, and a benefit for a local family in need of community support.
Oh, and we hope to see you at the Freedom Day Parade in Nisswa!

Freedom Day, July 3 in Nisswa
Show your community pride and support this July 3 at the annual Freedom Day celebration in Nisswa, with events from 10 a.m. all the way through the fireworks finale. Support the Nisswa Lions by purchasing a world-famous pork on a stick; enjoy the petting zoo, animal-adoption event, turtle races, live music and more.
Watch for our red-white-and-blue team in the 7 p.m. parade, loaded with candy and freebies to give away!
Community benefit planned for Bailey family
A community benefit for Michelle Bailey will be held at 5 p.m. July 18 at the Nisswa Community Center. Michelle — wife of Nisswa Fire Chief Shawn Bailey — has been diagnosed with Grade 4 glioblastoma, the most aggressive form of brain tumor.
Community members are invited to attend and support the family while helping offset expenses related to treatment and travel. The event will include a pulled pork dinner, live music, raffles, auctions, family activities, and other fundraising efforts to help support the Bailey family during Michelle’s ongoing medical treatment. Additional information and donation opportunities are available through the event organizers.
22nd annual ride set for Aug. 22
Just remember the number 22 this August, as the 22nd annual motorcycle ride for Homeless & Wounded Warriors — MN will be held on Saturday, Aug. 22.

The longtime event makes a round-trip day adventure from the Crosslake American Legion and includes several stops at popular locations up in the Northwoods. This year’s route includes stops at the Damsite Supper Club in Pine River, Docksider in Longville, and Knuckleheads Bar & Grill in Hill City.
Registration begins at 10 a.m. at the Crosslake American Legion. The group departs at 11:30 a.m. and returns to the Legion at 4 p.m. for a post-ride meal. Cost is $30 per rider, $10 per passenger, $30 per car and $10 per additional passenger.
It’s the loudest way to show your support for area veterans in need.
