Like every August, we clung to those late-summer days and made the most of every one we could. This year, that meant a lot for area veterans in need.
By land and by water, two annual Crosslake-based events raised nearly $70,000 for local veterans last month, blowing past previous annual totals. Bikers and boaters showed their enthusiasm, patriotism and generosity through a rockin’ day on Upper Whitefish Lake and a late-August motorcycle ride through the Northwoods for Homeless & Wounded Warriors — MN.
This month, it’s time once again to rally around another group that serves our communities: the Nisswa Fire Department. Bring some cash. Bring an appetite. Bring the enthusiasm.
And don’t put the bikes or boats away just yet. There’s still time to enjoy those outdoor activities before the season slips away.
Giving back, however … that’s always in season.
Fun with Nisswa Fire Dept. at The Pickle
Get fired up for a good time and a better cause at Ye Old Pickle Factory on Thursday, Sept. 10.
The Nisswa Fire Department returns to the Pickle Factory in Nisswa for a night of fundraising and entertainment, an event that has raised between $10,000 and $20,000 in years past.
The 4 to 7 p.m. fundraiser features food, raffles, silent auction items, free prizes, and free-will donations.
Come join Nisswa’s vibrant and friendly crew of firefighters for an exciting night of camaraderie, food, and community support. Help them fill the boot. Go Serve Big!

Annual ride raises $18K in funds
A sunny August day, dozens of motorcycles and a long-standing Northwoods tradition delivered a positive result for Homeless & Wounded Warriors–MN.
The 22nd annual HWW-MN motorcycle ride raised nearly $18,000 on Saturday, Aug. 22, more than doubling the $8,700 raised by the event last year.
Riders gathered at the Crosslake American Legion before the daylong route rumbled through the Northwoods, with stops at Pine River, Longville, and Hill City before returning. HWW-MN Chairman Russ Philstrom said the day went off without a hitch, including fantastic weather and no equipment breakdowns.
Back at the Legion, organizers served a post-ride meal to more than 100 riders, passengers and supporters.

On-water rock fest raises over $50K for veterans
The one event where it is indeed encouraged to “rock the boat” was yet again a success in Crosslake.
On Aug. 1, the annual Rock’n on Whitefish on-water rock fest raised more than $50,000 to help area veterans in need. Lake goers gathered their fleet on Upper Whitefish for a day of sunrays, music and patriotism.
Furthermore, a $2,500 portion of that total was donated directly to Homeless & Wounded Warriors – MN. That money will help local veterans with car repairs, home repairs, utility bills, medical equipment, and in countless other ways.
